Colette and Ananse: a play

With the summer holidays looming and my full quota of grandchildren set to spend most of the days with me, I decided to try out my script on them. We were going to make a movie. We read the play, sang the songs, drew pictures of Papa Bwa, Ananse and Dwens, made costumes and masks and choreographed simple dances. It was good fun, the children laughed, played and learned about their Caribbean heritage even if what we ended up with was more home movie than feature film.

A musical about Caribbean folklore and a little bit about Dominica, the land of rivers.
A play for children.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Grandchildren share a story about their grandmother (Colette) who, as a little girl, encountered Ananse, Dwens and Papa Bwa in the Dominican forest.
Nou navige. Nou navige
Nou navige travèse lanmè a
Nou navige pou Dominik
Zile nan Karayib la
Nou navige tankou pirat
Sou yon gwo bato pirat
Nou navige pou Dominik
Nou prale nan yon vwayaj
Nou navige. Nou navige
Nou navige travèse lanmè a
Nou navige pou Dominik
Zile nan Karayib la.
Zile nan Karayib la
Gwo rivyè
Ak ti rivyè
Long rivyè
Ak kout
Twasan swasant-senk rivyè
Rivyè cho
Ak rivyè frèt
Rivyè vit
Ak dousman
Rivyè pou chak jou nan ane a
Rivyè gwo twou san fon
Rivyè fon
Rivyè lajè
Etwat
Rivyè nan chak fon ak mòn
Rivyè, rivyè
Rivyè, rivyè
Tout kalite rivyè
Rivyè
Dominik peyi anpil rivyè
Sa se Dwens yo nan forè a
Hoop-hoop
Jwe nan pye bwa yo
Hoop-hoop
Avèk chapo kòn lajè
Hoop-hoop
Ak devan dèyè pye
Hoop hoop
Hoop hoop
Hoop
Hoop
Hoop hoop
Hoop hoop
Hoop
Hoop
Sa se Dwens yo nan forè a
Hoop-hoop
Chante pandan y ap jwe
Hoop-hoop
Yo vle nouvo zanmi
Hoop-hoop
Pou jwèt forè komik yo
Hoop hoop
Hoop hoop
Hoop
Hoop
Hoop hoop
Hoop hoop
Hoop
Hoop
Dwens yo nan forè a
Hoop-hoop
Vle tande non ou
Hoop-hoop
Pou rele ou nan forè a
Hoop-hoop
Epi mennen w byen lwen
